Original Works Program 2010

Important Dates:

October 29 - Package is sent home

November 10- Return package with order form, artwork, and check

December 9- Items ordered will be distributed at school to take home!

Original Works is a company that can turn your child's masterpiece into a cherished item that can be shared with family and friends. Your child has created an artwork that will be coming home inside a green bag with a folder/catalogue that looks something like this:
Inside you will find a letter and price list , an order form, and your child's artwork. If you would like to order something, please fill out the order form and return it in the bag with the artwork and check. Orders will be filled and sent to school for distribution by December 9, 2010. Please note that you may use other works of art but it must meet the following guidelines:
All artwork MUST:
* Be on 8"x10 1/2" or 8 1/2 x 11 paper (copy paper is not recommended)
* Have child's name, teacher, and school name written on back
* Have a "T" on the back of the artwork to indicate the top
* BE ORIGINAL (no copyrighted/trademarked images or text...professional sports team logos, cartoon characters, professional photography studios,etc)
* No glitter, metallic material, or 3-D objects
* Artwork that does not comply with these rules will NOT be processed and will be returned without any products being made.

CHALK * ROCK * AND ROLL ART AUCTION

Enjoy an evening of music and art at Chalk, Rock, and Roll for kids, an event that will help raise money for The Children's Miracle Network.
Art work created by kids will be on display at The Lemon Drop, an art gallery, located at 416 W. Commercial Street during the First Friday Art Walk in Springfield.
The displayed art work will be auctioned off that evening with all proceeds given to the Children's Miracle Network.
Come Enjoy some great Art, Good Music, And Support the Children's Miracle Network!I hope you can make it...I'll be there!

When: October 1, 2010 (First Friday Art Walk)

I receive A LOT of information about various art contests that you can participate in outside of school. I have created a new link menu titled "Art Contests". If you are interested in entering one of the contests, you will need to read the information and get your parent's permission to enter. You will need to use your own supplies and your parents will have to mail in your entry. I would love to hear from you if you choose to enter one of the contests! Maybe you could be featured on this blog!

Students have been learning how to "S.O.A.R" in the art room and working on a mural that shows them soaring in all sorts of creative ways. Look for the finished mural to be hung in the artroom windows sometime next week!

Harold and the Purple Crayon

I just found out about this very cool program that Hammons Hall for the performing arts provides called "School Matinee". If you have kiddos at home, this would be another great opportunity to expose your children to the Arts.(I'm thinking field trip anyone?) On February 23rd they are having "Harold and the Purple Crayon", one of my favorite books about drawing from the imagination. I would love to see how they adapt it onto the stage. Winter is here!

We have started making all sorts of wonderful art inspired by the cold weather! We have been learning about color, highlights and shadows, drawing complex shapes, so many wonderful concepts! I will break them down when I get some extra time. But for now, I wanted to post some pictures so you could enjoy them! Bundle up and ENJOY!!

Visiting Artist

Students got a chance to watch and visit with a real artist during our Character Education Assembly featuring "Self-Control" this past month. The artist, a retired area principal, came to our school and started her painting during the assembly. Working from a photograph that one of our students got to choose, she then moved her easle into the main foyer and exhibited self-control and perseverance while working to finish it. She stayed ALL day visiting with students, answering their questions while she worked. At the end of the day she had completed the painting! She took it around and showed all the kids the finished painting!

It's amazing what you can do when you have the self-control and perseverance to finish something you start!!

Sunset Silhouettes

15 of these are on display at the Nixa Senior Center for the month of November!

Third grade students now understand that a silhouette is a dark image against a light-colored background. To create these wonderful fall pictures, students explored a wet-on-wet watercolor technique called a drip painting. They first wet the paper and then dripped on the sunset colors. Watching the colors drip down the paper created a lot of excitement in the art room! The colors blended nicely into each other, creating our light colored background. For the dark image, students used india ink and painted things they might see outside. We practiced painting trees, and most choose to include one in their final picture.

COME TO THE ART SHOW!
We hope you can come to the Mathew's Art Show April 16th from 5:00pm until 7:30pm. We will be show casing all the wonderful projects we have worked on throughout the year. Each student will have at least one art piece in the show. The artwork will be hung in the K-1 hallway, the cafeteria/gym hallway, and in the art room. Make sure to stop in the art room to see the pottery!

Out of this world shapes!

Students used geometric shapes to create one of a kind robots and rockets. They are designed to help kids out. Here are some of the ideas the students had..."my robot is mad because people are polluting the water!" "I designed my robot to play basketball and I love it. And I thought it would look cool." "My robot diver dived and saved somebody. He is a water police."

Happy Grandparents Day!

Students have been thinking about their grandparents and grandfriends in art. When asked what they will be like when they are a grandparent the kids responded in some very thoughtful ways.
Here are some quotes from some of our students:

When I am a grandparent I will....

"wait for them at the stoplight. Hold their hand across the street. Put them right next to me."-second grader

"I will cook"-kindergartener

"I will try to buy a moter scoter. I'll use it to visit my grandkids. I hope I'll be as good as you are! -second grader

"if i were a grandparent I would want to live next to grandkids. I would like to play with them. I would have them over every chance I had." -second grader

"When I am a grandma I will help my grandchildren be better in school. And love them."-first grader

American Gothic Grandparents

In celebration of Grandparent's Day, 4th graders created a parody of the famous portrait "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. The famous pair is replaced with the students grandparents. Look for "clues" that tell you about these special people.

Snowy Cityscapes

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Happy snow days everyone! I hope you are staying warm and cozy and enjoying the first beautiful Ozark snowfall of the year. These cityscapes were created by 3rd grade students using a crayon resist painting technique. We finished them by using toothbrushes to "flick" the falling snow...what fun that was!

Basket Weaving

Baskets woven from materials found in the environment, such as grasses, vines, leaves, and bark have been used by almost every culture in the world. They help make work easier and great for storage, but they are also a form of artistic expression. 3rd graders learned the parts of a weaving while creating these colorful baskets.

Clay owls

This was an extension to the Owl drawings we did previously. Second graders were learning how to use lines to create implied texture. When working with the clay, we rolled slabs of clay to build the body then used different objects/tools to impress into the clay to create actual (real) texture. Students then learned about the firing process and the glazing process. What a great learning experience!

Indian Shields

Students chose an animal that has a characteristic that they would like to have...such as the strength of a bear, or the eyes of a hawk. The feathers represent something about the artist. Three feathers could represe nt three siblings the student has or the three teeth they lost last week! Lacing is a skill that builds good eye-hand coordination along with those fine-motor skills. Great job 1st Graders!

Plains Indian Tepee

Kindergartners loved creating a Native American picture inspired by the book "The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush". It was fun to learn how Native Americans told stories using pictures (pictograph) instead of words. Blending warm colors of yellow, orange, and red made a beautiful sunset sky!

"Frightening Facades"

4th grade had a spooktacular time creating the front view (facade) of a house. After viewing different architectural elements they choose the style of roof, form of house, window and door shapes, and setting for their house. We looked at sample houses and discovered that they were drawn using just basic shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles. Looking for basic shapes in sample house allowed them to see how combining basic shapes allows you to create a more complex shape such as a house. We drew our houses on black paper and then outlined our lines with glue! Day 2 we learned some cool chalk techniques such as blending and layering to create a spooky feel to our art. The results were frightenly fantastic not to mention frameable!!!

"Dem Bones"

Third grade had a "bone-a-fied" good time learning about the skeletal system in art. We listened to the book "Dem Bones" which talked about each major bone in our body. While working, we enjoyed listening to a song you might remember...come on and sing it with us...the head bone's connected to the neck bone, the neck bone's connected with the shoulder bone.....thanks Marsha for sharing this great lesson with me!

Not so scarey SCARECROWS

1st Grade Students created a multi-media artwork of a scarecrow. On day one, we learned about warm colors and used them to create a sunset sky. We also learned about cool colors and used them to create the ground. Day two we discussed that a scarecrow's "job" was to scare away animals/birds from our crops and gardens. We brainstormed different vegetables and what we might see in a garden. Then we got out the paint shirts and got busy! On day three we got to design our scarecrow. We cut out shirts, pants, hats, and glued our scarecrow parts to popsicle sticks. Gluing "straw" (raffia) added a nice finishing touch. The students are very proud of their work!

Triangle Witches
